Summary of Activities for 2024<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Kokkino Vouno, the steep pyroclastic hill located above the chapel of Agios Nikolaos\nand at a short distance from the archaeological site of Akrotiri, was known to\narchaeological research from the single-day excavation conducted by Spyridon\nMarinatos in 1968 (see Proceedings of the Archaeological Society at Athens 1968 and\nExcavations at Thera II of the same year), as well as from a limited number of surface\nfinds collected over the years by Christos Doumas and Andreas Vlachopoulos (see A.\nVlachopoulos, \u201cKokkino Vouno: a purlieu of the urban centre at Akrotiri \u201d, ALS.\nPeriodical Publication of the Society for the Support of Prehistoric Thera, Issue 8,\n2012 (2019), pp. 154\u2013170).\nThe presence of diagnostic surface finds dating to the Late Cycladic I\nperiod\u2014including fragments of wall paintings, pottery, stone artifacts, pieces of\ncopper, and mineral specimens\u2014together with the exceptionally strategic location of\nthe hill for overseeing the southern part of the island and the coasts of Thera,\ncontrolling the southbound maritime routes, and providing visibility extending as far\nas the northern coast and mountain ranges of Crete, formed the basis for the\nInterdisciplinary Surface Survey Project at Kokkino Vouno.\nThe project commenced in 2024, with fieldwork conducted from 1\u201315 July and the\nstudy of the recovered material from 8\u201315 September.\nThe 2024 investigations on the summit and slopes of Kokkino Vouno included the\nfollowing:<\/h6>\n
 <\/span><\/h6>\n
1. Systematic Geophysical Survey of the Accessible Areas of Kokkino Vouno Using\nMagnetic Prospection.<\/a><\/span><\/h6>\n
The survey was undertaken and completed by Professor Emeritus of Geology\nGregoris Tsokas (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki).<\/span><\/h6>\n

2. Topographical Survey of the Hill by Surveying Engineer Dionysios Niotis\n(National Technical University of Athens)<\/h6>\n
For the purposes of the surface survey, the area accessible for investigation (the\nsummit and slopes of the hill) was divided into a survey grid marked on the ground\nwith semi-permanent markers. The principal grid consisted of 50 \u00d7 50 m squares,\neach containing 10 \u00d7 10 m sub-squares. In addition, points of interest identified\ndigitally by the Laboratory of Applied Geophysics of the Aristotle University of\nThessaloniki were marked on the ground. Aerial photographs covering the entire area\nof interest were acquired for the production of orthophotomaps at various scales\n(1:50\u20131:1000). Natural and anthropogenic landscape features were recorded to\nfacilitate an accurate overview of the study area and their faithful representation in\nplans. Elevation data were also collected to ensure the precise depiction of the area's\ngeomorphology. The project greatly benefited from cadastral data provided by\nKtimatologio S.A. (Hellenic Cadastre) following the issuance of a special permit\nauthorizing their use for university research<\/span>fig. 1<\/a>).<\/span><\/h6>\n
Throughout the surface survey, both horizontal and vertical coordinates of the finds\nwere recorded under the direction of the archaeological research team.<\/h6>\n

3. Systematic Identification and Recording of Surface Remains at Kokkino Vouno<\/h6>\n
Taking into consideration safe access\u2014particularly due to the steep eastern and\nwestern slopes of the hill\u2014the gridded area of 50 \u00d7 50 m squares was further\nsubdivided into 10 \u00d7 10 m units. These were systematically walked by a team of five\nresearchers at 2 m intervals, following standard archaeological surface survey\nprotocols (Image 2a<\/a> , Image 2b<\/a>). The 2024 survey team consisted of archaeology students from the University of\nIoannina, Ioanna Spanou and Stelios Stefanou, together with archaeology graduates\nG. Varsanis, A. Xenaki, and M. Chalari. <\/span><\/h6>\n
 Data collection was carried out using tablets and the KoboToolbox software platform,\na flexible system that allows the creation of customized recording forms and the\nsecure online storage of data. Three recording forms were developed for the project:<\/span><\/h6>\n
- In situ artifact recording form, documenting the location of each object, its\nspatial relationship to the Marinatos excavation trench, GPS coordinates, and\nphotographs.<\/h6>\n
- Anthropogenic landscape intervention recording form, documenting human-\nmade modifications to the landscape (such as rock-cut surfaces), including\ntheir spatial relationship to the Marinatos trench, coordinates, and in situ\nphotographs.<\/h6>\n
- Laboratory artifact recording form, containing detailed information on each\nobject, including its description, decoration, cleaning and conservation\ntreatments, storage location within the Akrotiri Excavation Pottery Laboratory,\nchronological attribution, references to comparable material, descriptions of\nlaboratory analyses, photographs, and drawings following conservation.<\/span> <\/span><\/h6>\n
Following data collection, the two forms relating to portable artifacts (field and\nlaboratory records) can be linked within the R statistical environment, creating an\nintegrated database with advanced capabilities for data retrieval and analysis.<\/span><\/h6>\n
It is worth noting that the database was designed to accommodate material collected\nboth before the commencement of the project and during the course of the current\ninvestigation. Consequently, it provides a consistent framework for the efficient\ncollection, management, and analysis of information throughout all stages of the\nresearch.<\/h6>\n
The survey grid, the investigated squares, and the distribution of surface finds by\ncategory are illustrated in Images 2,<\/a> 3,<\/a> 4.<\/a> Representative finds from the 2024 field season are presented in Images 5,<\/a> 6,<\/a> 7,<\/a> 8,<\/a> 9,<\/a> 10,<\/a> 11,<\/a> 12,<\/a> 13,<\/a> 14<\/a>.<\/h6>\n
